Experiencing High Impedance on Coax Assembly?

Customers bring many questions to our team about their wire cable harnesses. This question is about how customers are experiencing high impedance on coax assemblies.

Most coaxial cables have a characteristic impedance of either 50, 52, 75, or 93 Ω. The RF industry uses standard type-names for coaxial cables. To review: In electrical engineering, impedance is the opposition to alternating current presented by the combined effect of resistance and reactance in a circuit.

Here is an occurrence with a potential solution from the Custom Interface team:

Occurrence:

If the coax cable was secured with lacing or tie wrap that has been applied too tightly, this might have indented the insulation, reducing the effectiveness of the dielectric and causing high impedance.

Solution:

>  Specifying not to tie lacing tight enough to indent insulation in the drawing,
>  Use a wider lacing to increase surface area and reduce pressure points
      and/or
>  Choosing another method for bundling (such as expandable sleeving).
    …may be a better solution.
